Guitarists and bassists:  How do you pronounce Ibanez?

I have a few people I know with that last name and proper Spanish pronunciation is EE-bhan'-yez

Every musician on the east coast however, that I've met and stores alike pronounce it:  Eye'-ban-ez

Well either way the joke's on us because it's not a Spanish company but a Japanese manufacturer from the turn of the 20th century.  They imported Salvator Ibanez guitars from Spain back then, so that's where they got the name

If I heard someone say it with EE, I probably wouldn't know what they were referring to.  I'm not a picker, but a musician still, and it's always been Eye'-ban-ez.

Back.  Again.

I pronounce each differently, just as you have them listed, Joe. Everyone I know that plays guitar pronounces it Eye'-ban-ez.

Seems like it should be spelled Ibañez if folks are pronouncing it EE-bhan'-yez.

Well I guess the Eye's have it!

I was kind of curious if in the West Coast it got pronounced more appropriately.  I always thought it odd how a Japanese company got a Spanish name anyway.  I've never known it as anything but "eye" but wondered.

This.

I'm from Oop* North. I presume MT is a Southerner. If we agree then it must be right.

* This should be spelt Up, but southerners can only say it right when spelt like this apparently.

The parent company of Eye-bah-nez is Hoshino, who are indeed headquartered in Japan.

that's exactly where i was going to go! lol

I don't know, but it's been said: You do or don't and then you're dead
So climb away, get higher, son- never straight, just move ahead
Know, my child, that there is no devil seekin' to cause guilt in the hearts to men.
No evil, save blind faith, ignorance, and the desire for the unprepared to blame others for the devastation left in the wake of change.
Fear not the movement of the heavens above or the earth below for change is what we are, my child.
And if we are reflections of the divine we must roll with these changes, for we are these changes.

Loan words are loan words.  The Japanese use the Portuguese word for "bread" because they'd never encountered it before buying it from Portuguese merchants.  In fact, their language is really interesting in terms of how it uses/incorporates foreign words.
