My guess is that in '77, Peart was already thinking about retiring.

So weird comparing this to their 77 Hammersith AFTK performance. The Passaic show just flows - no odd time keeping shifts in Bastille or Lakeside - they groove along perfectly.

Fast forward one year and the same songs are barely held together. Did Mr. Peart have a bit of a substance problem in 77? Or was he trying out new stuff? Or was it just an off night?

That Hammersmith recording is from February 1978.

I saw them on that tour (a few days before Hammersmith), and on the previous tour (which actually was in '77). I didn't really think they were on their game on the AFTK tour. The performance was a bit perfunctory, lacklustre, a job of work, though the second night was better. But they were absolutely on fire in June 1977. I suspect the pressure and quantity of touring had more to do with it than substance abuse.

Check out Lakeside Park with TAURUS PEDALS!!! They were road-testing them prior to using them in the studio for the first time on AFTK!!!!

Yeah, I like 'em. It's like getting to have a different version.
