“The wild dogs cry out in the night
As they grow restless, longing for some solitary company
I know that I must do what's right
As sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti”

And I love this song but holy shit.

Not sure if dumb or just awful.

High on the sacred mountain
Up the seven thousand stairs
In the golden light of autumn
There was magic in the air
Clouds surrounded the summit
The wind blew strong and cold
Among the silent temples
And the writing carved in gold
Somewhere in my instincts
The primitive took hold
I stood at the top of the mountain
And China sang to me
In the peaceful haze of harvest time
A song of eternity
If you raise your hands to heaven
You will live a hundred years
I stood there like a mystic
Lost in the atmosphere
The clouds were suddenly parted
For a moment I could see
The patterns of the landscape
Reaching to the eastern sea
I looked upon a presence
Spanning forty centuries
I thought of time and distance
The hardships of history
I heard the hope and the hunger
When China sang to me

What’s dumb about that? I think it’s evocative, if a bit clunky.

I like that one as well. It just isn’t right for Rush.

Well it's "dogs" plural - so they're not alone.

Solitary company? They have company - they're together - being "dogs" plural!

What does a mountain have to do with "doing what's right"??? (Peart could have written these)

Also:

Mount Olympus

Elevation9,573′

Mount Kilimanjaro

Elevation19,341′

Kilimanjaro can't rise like Olympus, and Olympus can't rise like Kilimanjaro!

And it's a shitty simile: Kilimanjaro could ostensibly 'rise like Olympus' over Thessaly, but not over the Serengeti. Makes NO sense.

In a world lit only by fire
Long train of flares under piercing stars
I stand watching the steamliners roll by
The caravan thunders onward
To the distant dream of the city
The caravan carries me onward
On my way at last
On my way at last
I can't stop thinking big
I can't stop thinking big
On a road lit only by fire
Going where I want, instead of where I should
I peer out at the passing shadows
Carried through the night into the city
Where a young man has a chance of making good
A chance to break from the past
The caravan thunders onward
Stars winking through the canvas hood
On my way at last

The dogs could be miles apart instead of in a pack, seeking to meet and form a pack.

He has to do what’s right - a certainty to him, like that bloody big mountain is certainly there.

Kilimanjaro is the one mountain in a vast plain, which it towers over, in the same way Olympus towers over the Thessalonian hills.

So he's metaphorically comparing a mountain, to a LESSER MOUNTAIN?

And he's already comparing his "certainty" to Kilimanjaro! Why bring Greece into this song about AFRICA????

I know just how to whisper
And I know just how to cry
I know just where to find the answers
And I know just how to lie
I know just how to fake it
And I know just how to scheme
I know just when to face the truth
And then I know just when to dream
And I know just where to touch you
And I know just what to prove
I know when to pull you closer
And I know when to let you loose
And I know the night is fading
And I know the time's gonna fly
And I'm never gonna tell you everything I've gotta tell you
But I know I've gotta give it a try
And I know the roads to riches
And I know the ways to fame
I know all the rules and then I know how to break 'em
And I always know the name of the game
But I don't know how to leave you
And I'll never let you fall
And I don't know how you do it
Making love out of nothing at all
Out of nothing at all, out of nothing at all
Out of nothing at all, out of nothing at all
Out of nothing at all
Making love out of nothing at all
Everytime I see you all the rays of the sun are
Streaming through the waves in your hair
And every star in the sky is taking aim at
Your eyes like a spotlight
The beating of my heart is a drum, and it's lost
And it's looking for a rhythm like you
You can take the darkness at the pit of the night
And turn into a beacon burning endlessly bright
I've gotta follow it 'cause everything I know
Well, it's nothing 'til I give it to you
I can make the runner stumble
I can make the final block
I can make every tackle at the sound of the whistle
I can make all the stadiums rock

I can make tonight forever
Or I can make it disappear by the dawn
I can make you every promise that has ever been made
And I can make all your demons be gone
But I'm never gonna make it without you
Do you really want to see me crawl
And I'm never gonna make it like you do
Making love out of nothing at all

Who says cocaine isn't good for you?

I think these read pretty well - but the way they are sung - JESUS.

ELP - Still You Turn Me On

Do you want to be the pillow where I lay my head
Do you want to be the feathers lying in my bed?
Do you want to be a color cover magazine
Create a scene
Every day a little sadder
A little madder?
Someone get me a ladder

At 1:47.

;)

You walked into the party
Like you were walking on a yacht
Your hat strategically dipped below one eye
Your scarf, it was apricot
You had one eye on the mirror
And watched yourself gavotte
And all the girls dreamed that they'd be your partner
They'd be your partner, and

You're so vain
You probably think this song is about you
You're so vain,
I'll bet you think this song is about you
Don't you?
Don't you?

Oh, you had me several years ago
When I was still naive
Well, you said that we made such a pretty pair
And that you would never leave
But you gave away the things you loved
And one of them was me
I had some dreams, they were clouds in my coffee
Clouds in my coffee, and

You're so vain
You probably think this song is about you
You're so vain, you're so vain
I'll bet you think this song is about you
Don't you?
Don't you?

Well I hear you went to Saratoga
And your horse, naturally, won
Then you flew your Learjet up to Nova Scotia
To see the total eclipse of the sun
Well, you're where you should be all the time
And when you're not, you're with some underworld spy
Or the wife of a close friend,
Wife of a close friend, and

You're so vain
You probably think this song is about you
You're so vain, you're so vain
I'll bet you think this song is about you
Don't you?
Don't you?

Whoo, hoo, yeah
Whoo, hoo, yeah
She'll adore you and she'll floor you
With her wisdom and her vision
And you'll love it and think of it
Till you lose all intuition
Come on
She can move you and improve you
With her love and her devotion
And she'll thrill you and she'll chill you
But you're headed for commotion
And you'll need her so you'll feed her
With your endless dedication
And the quicker you get sicker
She'll remove your medication
Get the firehouse
Cause she sets my soul afire
Get the firehouse
And the flames keep gettin' higher
She's like bad weather but it seems so good
You'd never leave her but you know you should
She's like bad weather but it seems so good
You'd never leave her but you know you should
Ooh
Get the firehouse
Cause she sets my soul afire
Get the firehouse
Whoo, hoo, yeah
Get the firehouse
Whoo, hoo, yeah

Firehouse by KISS. Seems a lot like an Eminem song when you read the lyrics. Same repetitive rhyming pattern he uses.

Angry Samoans: They Saved Hitler's Cock

They saved Hitler's cock.
They hid it under a rock.
I discovered it last night,
I couldn't even, believe my eyes.
If Hitler's cock could start to talk,
It would say to kill today.
If Hitler's cock could choose it's mate,
It would ask to share a date!
They saved Hitler's cock.
They stuffed it into a sock.
They saved Hitler's cock.
And now it wants to talk.
Now it's starting to get hard,
I found it in my backyard.
Every night it kills a dog.
And now it wants some night in fog.
Hitler's cock is on the loose,
And now I'm scared of what it wants to do!

It has been said that Stalin used Hitler's skull as an ashtray.  I sort of with that it's true.

Kilimanjaro can't rise like Olympus, and Olympus can't rise like Kilimanjaro!

I prefer my misheard lyric: "rising like a leopress" As in, a female leopard, presumably in some sort of stalking pose, alluding to the rather wide peak of Kilimanjaro.

labente deinde paulatim disciplina velut desidentes primo mores sequatur animo, deinde ut magis magisque lapsi sint, tum ire coeperint praecipites, donec ad haec tempora quibus nec vitia nostra nec remedia pati possumus perventum est.

First our declining morals slid, bit by bit, and then our very national spirit.  Then the collapse became greater and greater, and our principles began to go, until at last, it has come to this age, in which we can bear neither our crimes nor the cure for them.

Em uses WAY more complex rhymes than that. I guess you're noting the internal rhyme scheme, common to many southern and midwestern rappers.  But listen to "Without Me" for an example of Eminem quite creatively using internal rhymes in the verses.

.

You are absolutely right. And I thought it was “leopress” for decades!
