The new one. I dig the mix - the playing is all well done. Great fucking drumming. But holy shit - the guitar playing is really excellent.

Decent song.  There's no mistaking that it's DT, for sure.

I don't understand why Portnoy has his kit set up so that he's reaching for the sky to bang on shit.  Looks stupid and it's completely inefficient.   Then again, I'm biased...I don't like him.  haha

Could be for recording purposes; keeping the cymbals isolated from the rest of the drums. Anyway, that's what someone in the comments section speculated. lol.

His live setup is like that too. I don't remember if it's as high up as in this video, but he does have an upper row of drums and cymbals live.

There has always been something about Labrie’s vocals that are off putting to me. Best thing I can come up with is they sound “fake.” I know that’s not really the right word, but it’s the best I got.

I've always felt he sounds like an '80s metal singer, specifically the singer from Europe's The Final Countdown. Less grit, more quasi-operatic. Geoff Tate school.

3:24 thru 3:36 makes me think of a metal Jethro Tull.

I'm no DT fan, but this is the most listenable they've ever been. LaBrie's voice is less pitchy and high. It's like he calmed down a bit. And you can't deny the musicianship here.

And Mangini is massively more interesting and skilled than Portnoy.

Cymbals and Octoban drums are up like that so he could show more of himself and his hits are more visual.

The tune is okay. Sections feel more like mainstream metal if metal was ever to go mainstream. The best DT tunes are from their first two releases, Images and Words and Awake.

Some of the keyboards remind of that 80's band, SAGA

No way.  Don't get me wrong, technically they're both incredible.  With the edge going to Mangini I'd say.  But to me, he sounds more clinical and robotic than Portnoy.  I dunno, they're both awesome drummers in their own ways, but MP's got a signature sound that's been missing from DT since he left.

It's no 'A Change of Seasons.' Old DT good.....

The only visuals we get are of his armpits.  Yeah he's a great player but it's a gimmick and it looks stupid and distracting.  I can't believe he's actually comfortable playing that way.  You waste a lot of energy with your arms up over your head like that for so long, plus the added distance your stick has to travel going from drum to crash.  I get that some drummers prefer their cymbals higher than others, but that's just nuts. Check out about 5:15.  He can barely even reach that high.
