Surprised to note that this album came out six years ago.

Gave it another listen.

Apart from The Anarchist and The Garden, it is still really disappointing.  Still dunno why people think it is a return to form.

The End.

I enjoy almost every track.  Caravan is outstanding, as is the title track and The Anarchist.  Headlong Flight, The Garden, and Carnies are also quite juicy.  The Wreckers, Seven Cities of Gold, and BU2B all come and go with me.

It’s a shame because after years and years I started to like about half of VT. I still don’t feel this one.

Same for me. I like the cover and casing, I just can't listen to the music.

This is why they need to release one more. A return to the return to form

It's too bad that CA was their last album, such a disappointing album to go out with.

For me, CA was a better swansong than the previous two.

Headlong Flight and The Anarchist are decent.  The rest kind of meh.  Not a fan of The Garden.  Too sappy.

Headlong Flight is great.

Like theft in a Multi Storey carpark that is wrong on so many levels!

Mrs Slikk heard it on the radio one day and she thought it a complete mess. Not very often she gets things so right!

I dig that bridge/jam section. They sound alive there. Maybe not a huge fan of the chorus though.

I was amazed when I heard it. To me it was the best thing they'd done for decades, and by a massive distance. I don't think it's one of the top three or four records they made, but simply finding out that it wasn't total, unmitigated hamfisted phoned-in excrement from start to finish like the previous couple of albums had been was a massive surprise.

Only Headlong Flight lets it down, in my view. That one is dross, admittedly. I don't like Wish Them Well much. The Wreckers is inoffensive but boring. The Garden is reasonably well-done hammy chick rock. I sort of like it anyway.

Everything else is a gem. The title tune is one of the very best things they ever did, to my mind. And what a beautiful song Halo Effect is.

It shall be written that with the dying gasp of their powers, the three men of Rush reached for glory.

And glory did not elude their grasp.

I read somewhere that this the flip side of Caress of Steel - thematically anyway. A sort of musical William Blake thing. Songs of Innocence vs. Songs of Experience. That’s why we have some Caress musical references throughout CA.

Caress was a “young band on the road” album - on a great adventure, storming venues all over North America leaving heartbroken Panaceas in their wake.

CA is the current road weary version.

Still like it.  Definitely better than pretty much everything in the two decades preceding it except maybe Vapor Trails (the good mix).

I still want The Garden performed at my funeral.  What a request to make of a cover band.  I'd like to think they'll enjoy having a fresh tune to play.

Wreckers is the best vocal melody Geddy's written in a while, BU2B and the Title Track are amazing.

My biggest issue with the whole thing remains Geddy's weakened voice, but let's be honest, plenty of other rock singers sound a lot worse a lot earlier in their careers (Geoff Tate and James LeBrie, for instance)

labente deinde paulatim disciplina velut desidentes primo mores sequatur animo, deinde ut magis magisque lapsi sint, tum ire coeperint praecipites, donec ad haec tempora quibus nec vitia nostra nec remedia pati possumus perventum est.

First our declining morals slid, bit by bit, and then our very national spirit.  Then the collapse became greater and greater, and our principles began to go, until at last, it has come to this age, in which we can bear neither our crimes nor the cure for them.

Still can’t hear any Moog Taurus on The Anarchist.

Even with nice headphones?
