First Round Update: Derogatory Names

as provided by Slim

French - garlic munchers

Germany - bratwurst munchers

Mexico - sombrero-wearers

Switzerland - wristwatch manufacturers

S. Korea - dog munchers

Belgium – Miserable Fat Belgian Bastards

Panama - canal diggers and/or elegant hat wearers

Wait…what? Elegant Hat Wearers??

Now that’s WAY out of line!!

Uh oh...equalizer for Tunisia. Looking forward to a truly horrible name for that group should they beat England

Half time.

Classic England so far. Not getting our finishing together, not taking our chances and getting punished for it against inferior opposition in the first game of a big tournament.

Tunisia looked nervous early on and a couple of strong chances seemed to settle our own nerves. No complaints about the pen, but we should have put the game out of our opponents' reach by now.

I'd like to think we're more likely to win than draw (and certainly than lose). But I won't be surprised whatever happens.

Try as I might I cannot associate Tunisia with anything unique or distinctive whatever. So it's "Tunisia".

We started well, and ended well. But a large quantity of good chances went begging in between. It doesn't bode well.

Awful to lose the game in stoppage time, but nice to win it at the last gasp.

^^^This. My God, it could have been 4-1 or 5-1 with the right shot. Then again, the hot player usually tends to make the hot play. Harry was definitely in the right place at the right time. Lukaku not slouching today, either.

That wasn't too bad for England at the World Cup!

Actually beating lower ranked opposition and actually looking as if some of the team have met and seen a football before.

Mrs Slikk works alongside Harry Maguire's shirt. It's more reliable than he is.

Maguire looked uncomfortable, to me. Looked like he didn't want the ball. Quite impressed with Trippier.

I mean, they had Carthage, who were so incompetent they insulted their best general after the First Punic War and got him to march on their capital with their own mercenaries.  That's pretty goddamn incompetent.  But that was also 2250 years ago.

More recently they're the least interesting bit of North Africa.  No history like Egypt, no great food like Morocco, and nowhere near the political instability of a Libya.  They're just the least interesting thing in their region.

labente deinde paulatim disciplina velut desidentes primo mores sequatur animo, deinde ut magis magisque lapsi sint, tum ire coeperint praecipites, donec ad haec tempora quibus nec vitia nostra nec remedia pati possumus perventum est.

First our declining morals slid, bit by bit, and then our very national spirit.  Then the collapse became greater and greater, and our principles began to go, until at last, it has come to this age, in which we can bear neither our crimes nor the cure for them.

Is Tunisia in Africa?? I thought they were one of those little European countries, like Luxembourg and Mauritius.

Monty Python's Life of Brian was filmed in Tunisia. :)

You could refer to Tunisia as Tatooine. That is really its biggest claim to fame I think.

And I am still picking Mexico to win it all.

I googled "The natural beauty of Tunisia" and came back with this.

Next! And the irresistible force of Colombia meets the immovable object of Japan - in a clash that's going to go down in history as one of the many football matches that are happening this week.

I'll say the cocaine producers will overcome the diminutive sushi eaters by two goals to nil.

Colombia will have a fighting chance if they don't score goals against themselves.

I'd say the Colombians' chances have rather diminished since I typed that last post. Penalty to Japan and a Colombian player sent off in the first 5 minutes!

And he's scored. Colombia 0-1 Japan.

Well I thought the Colombians did well to get one back with a man down, but the Japanese made their advantage count in the end.

And now the titans of Poland meet the giants of Senegal. The vodka-quaffing cleaners and hard-working bar staff should come away from this encounter with all three points.
