Oh! It was OK!! But there were no clowns, no tigers, lions or bears,
candy-floss, toffee apples, no clowns.

Beato has a pretty amazing channel.

Over the last year, I've really fallen down the rabbit hole on his channel (and Adam Neely and David Bruce's channels as well).  There's some really great music theory stuff on YouTube

More relevant to this thread...

labente deinde paulatim disciplina velut desidentes primo mores sequatur animo, deinde ut magis magisque lapsi sint, tum ire coeperint praecipites, donec ad haec tempora quibus nec vitia nostra nec remedia pati possumus perventum est.

First our declining morals slid, bit by bit, and then our very national spirit.  Then the collapse became greater and greater, and our principles began to go, until at last, it has come to this age, in which we can bear neither our crimes nor the cure for them.

You ain't kiddin'. This guy knows what he's talking about. Here he is talking about the Ed Sheeran infringement lawsuit. He should have given expert testimony. I tend to agree that using a simple chord progression that another song[s] uses is not infringement - especially when the vocal melody is starkly different from the original. We're talking about the fundamental language of music here. If I were to copy, say, the chord progressions from Freewill but changed the vocal melody, Rush might still have a case for infringement because those progressions are pretty unique. But for the Sheeran suit, it really just looks like a copyright troll taking advantage of a legal system that has little to no understanding of music theory.

Btw, in the Rick Beato video I posted above, Rick talks about the Sheeran suit, as well, and he says something pretty interesting that I hadn't considered. His theory is that we're seeing an uptick in copyright suits these days because songwriters have seen a dramatic reduction in royalties in recent years and these lawsuits are meant to keep the cash flowing in.
