They are part of the stoner-rock movement.  I don't know how many of those bands made it across the pond.  Queens of the Stone Age and Monster Magnet are probably the most known of the genre, though Fu Manchu is definitely up there.  The music varies, but much of it is as if you took Deep Purple's "Highway Star" and just metaled it up a bit.

I've heard of Fu Manchu. Stoner rock is okay in bits and pieces but much of it is too repetitious for me.

I prefer to be a rocker who doesn't need to get stoned

Hey, I got an idea. Why doesn't Alex guest 50% on an album by Geddy?  B)

Yes, it's all groove.  Kind of the opposite of prog.

I'm a huge fan of the stoner genre and Fu Manchu is my favorite of the bunch.  However the 18-minute song he guests on is not "prog" or an "epic" by any means, mostly instrumental and to me not all that representative of their style.  I'm actually disappointed that their new album is only 36 minutes long which means this one tune comprises half the album.  Earlier stuff from the 90's like "Daredevil" and  "In Search Of" are probably my favorites but I like much of the later stuff too like "Signs of Infinite Power".  Only album I'm not that keen on is "Start the Machine" from 2004, too much like punk rock.  Most of their songs are about cars, vans, racing, California, sci-fi and cheesy 60's monster movies.  Huge fat fuzz tones and a deadpan singing style.  I love 'em...

In all my years as a Fu Manchu fan, I never got even an inkling that they might be into Rush - certainly not from their music.  They've done a few 70's covers in their own style -- "Godzilla" by Blue Oyster Cult, "Slow Ride" by Foghat, "Moving in Stereo" by the Cars.... I'm certain Alex never heard of them!  Probably emailed them his guitar parts but would love to see a picture of him in the studio with the lads...

He just emailed them the guitar parts. It’s in the quoted article.

Then we got word that Alex Lifeson agreed to play some guitar on the song: holy shit," he continues. "We sent him the song and said to play whatever/wherever he wanted to. He sent back the song with awesome riffs, sci-fi effects and even some pick slides. He made the song 10,000,000 times cooler."

Ha, didn't bother to read the article.  It also answers the other thing I speculated about:  Lifeson tells RS. "I'd known of Fu Manchu for many years and thought that it would be a fun project to work on, as I typically come from another guitar direction and welcomed the challenge to do something a little different.
