Got this mean looking black beast off eBay. It's a Steinberger Spirit, which means it is really an Epiphone. Aftermarket passive pickups make it L-O-U-D. Much louder than my active Music Man.

The controls are like those on a Jazz Bass. The pots are a bit crap though, they don't do much for 3/4 of their travel. I think I will roll the front one off some and dial the tone down, like Jaco.

Better not take it to open mic nights in Brixton as armed coppers might show up and slot me.....

I will string it EADGC, get chordal up the top, treat it like a baritone guitar.

That's a nice bass but why is Peter Frampton holding it?

Congrats. I had a 5-string Spirit over a decade ago - wasn't a bad bass at all for the money, really. I found that the way they hang is much improved if you add a strap hook like the ones that came standard on the Steinberger Synapse basses. I added one to a Hohner B2A I still have around (very similar to a Spirit). A few bits from the local hardware and some drilling, grinding, etc.

That's a really interesting bass.  Haven't heard a 'berger in quite a while.

Thanks. It does hang rather strangely - the middle C frets seem inches to the left of where they should be. Will have a dig around on eBay for the Synapse strap hook - or as you say do a bit of modding....

Got the new strings on. EADGB now. So it is a kind of bass-baritone and I can play chords without going BLUUUUNNNGGGG.

He's the singer for Pearl Jam.
