What is happening.

This seems like a very disturbing development.

I don't think it's too surprising. Here's what he said in November:

Dems wanted Comey fired during the campaign and now they're apoplectic.

Poor guy. It's like he took turns pissing off each side. Ignores IRS targeting conservative groups, helps keep Hillary out of the Oval Office. I guess all's well that ends well.

Hey...where's Perry?

It's telling that the Dems' outgoing president, who had nothing at that point to lose, DIDN'T fire him.
Almost like the Lord Dampnut is unconcerned with how despotic and corrupt he looks.

Sally Yates had to be fired.  She was pretty blatant in her insubordination.

The James Comey firing took me by surprise, but the truth is, the guy was a mess.  Whether or not his public statements affected the election, his public statements did erode the trust of the public in the FBI regardless of political persuasion.  In that context, his firing was legitimate.  It does trouble me that it's happening amid the ongoing investigation into Russian influences on the election, but I don't think Congress will let that go.  I think John McCain, at least, will pursue any Trump connections regardless of party affiliation, and if the Comey firing has anything to do with that, it will be the end of Trump.

The way I see it, Comey usurped the Attorny General's authority in saying Clinton would not be charged.

So he made an enemy there, and it gave Trump the excuse to fire him before Comey got too close to presenting evidence for a charge of Treason.

Also, I believe there are four separate lines of investigation into Trump - Senate, House, FBI and financial, and this firing could shut down the latter two as any Federal employee will be thinking very carefully about his or her pension now.

Yeah I don't think Comey is going away. They will drag him in front of Congress.

Yes, he'll be a fixture for a while.  I think the main point is that the way the FBI works, changing the head doesn't really change the investigation as much as it would otherwise.  The FBI investigates, impartially and the career law enforcement people will continue doing what they are doing.  I'd be concerned if Trump ousted Comey and put in Jared Kushner, but letting the number 2 guy take over, on the surface doesn't sound bad.

Comey clearly sealed his doom when he said he Hillary Clinton broke the law but he wouldn't be recommending prosecution.  The FBI is an investigating body, you can't get up and hold a press conference and say these things.  Too political.  Timing is questionable, of course.

I still claim we need 3 threads.  Ousted, canned, and fired convey subtle shades of meaning, and I had something to say about each of them.
