Of all the troubling issues with this story, I can’t get beyond the terrible decision making process and lack of communication protocol with a major airline, a 30 billion dollar business. You would think forcefully dragging someone off a plane would require mid- or upper-management approval, with the knowledge that it will be a PR disaster because everyone will have their iPhones in the air videoing this mess. I can’t imagine anyone in that pay grade would sign off on that. So, is it the people at the front desk and some dopey low level supervisor making that call to Chicago PD? Inmates running the asylum.

Certainly someone intelligent would look at the facts and say,

‘Ok, we need to get four employees to Louisville by tomorrow and no one is volunteering to take another flight. No room on other airlines. Hmmm, ok hire a limo for $500 to drive them all four and a half fucking hours to Louisville. After all, we run a business here’

Problem solved.

It was cops acting out of control not United.

The man was wronged and hurt- United will get sued. But my god the reaction to this is too much.

That's said--Great thread though!

United absolutely precipitated the incident by calling the police. BTW, I said Chicago PD, technically Chicago Airport Police...what ever the distinction is there. I do think the officers should have assessed the situation and, realizing that the man was not intoxicated or acting out of line, decided against dragging him off. I just don't know what the letter of the law is here. Airline wants him off, right or wrong, not based on prejudice...he's got to go. He refuses, they have to escort him off. Perhaps they should have called their superiors too.

That said, I just read these cops were suspended...so maybe they did act with excessive force. The whole thing is stupid.

Given the legal document you agree to when you ticket, they are within their rights to get you off of the plane.  I think the idea is that it's not "by any means necessary", it should be reasonable and this clearly was not reasonable.  In this case, they probably should have waited this guy out a bit longer because perhaps if they did, and threatened him a little, he would have left on his own accord.

Police forces in general use overwhelming force now, compared to in days past.  It's because it has been proven to save lives.  When police respond with overwhelming force, people mostly give in rather than fight back.  That's why they do it.  I just don't think this is a case where that is appropriate.
