Where do we start?

5/7/2014

Weather Channel co-founder John Coleman is not buying the Obama White House climate-change agenda.

This week, the Obama administration released a new report, the National Climate Assessment, containing dire warnings about climate change.

Many politicians, journalists, and entertainment artists — groups who ordinarily lack any scientific training or background — insist that the global warming debate is settled and there are no dissenters from the conventional wisdom, even though one of the fundamentals of science is to constantly test hypotheses.

The environmental movement originally sounded the alarm over global cooling, then global warming, prior to the climate change appellation. The White House report now uses “climate disruption” as the new descriptor.

Coleman, who previously called global warming the greatest scam in history, is joining some others in the scientific community derisively referred to as deniers, however, in expressing skepticism about the consensus about man-made climate change.

Meteorologist Coleman, who founded The Weather Channel in 1981, explained in part that in his opinion there is no significant man-made global warming:

“The sky is falling. ‘Climate Change’ is running wild and disaster is certain unless we immediately stop burning coal and oil and move quickly to ‘green energy’ to eliminate use of fossil fuels. Heat waves, huge floods, powerful storms, droughts and rising seas are on the verge of killing millions of us and destroying our civilization. That is my summary of the new Federal Assessment of Climate Change issued by a Obama administration team of more than 300 specialists guided by a 60-member federal advisory committee produced the report… I am deeply disturbed to have to suffer through this total distortion of the data and agenda driven, destructive episode of bad science gone berserk… Please allow me to hold your attention for a few minutes to explain why I don’t buy into this Climate Change alarmism. The climate of Earth has never been ‘normal’ or stable. It has continuously changed through this planet’s 4.5 billion year history. Powerful storms, floods, droughts, heat waves and ice and snow storms have come and gone as long as Earth has existed…”

Continued Coleman:

“The current bad science is all based on a theory that the increase in the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere from the exhaust of the burning of fossil fuels leads to a dramatic increase in ‘the greenhouse effect’ causing temperatures to skyrocket uncontrollably. This theory has failed to verify and is obviously dead wrong. But the politically funded and agenda driven scientists who have built their careers on this theory and live well on the 2.6 billion dollars of year of Federal grants for global warming/climate change research cling to this theory and bend the data spread to support the glorified claims in their reports and papers. When the temperature data could no longer be bent to support global warming, they switched to climate change and now blame every weather and climate event on CO2 despite the hard, cold fact that the ‘radiative forcing’ theory they built their claims on has totally failed to verify… ”

Al Gore is perhaps one of the careerists alluded to above. The former VP made a fortune flying around the world in a private jet talking about the environment, that is before he sold his TV station to Big Oil for $500 million.

The Obama administration has also awarded billions of taxpayer dollars to politically connected green energy companies, many of which have failed.

As The Inquisitr has previously reported, former NASA scientist Dr. Leslie Woodcock called man-made climate change nonsense and that the term itself is meaningless: “The theory of ‘man-made climate change’ is an unsubstantiated hypothesis [about] our climate [which says it] has been adversely affected by the burning of fossil fuels in the last 100 years, causing the average temperature on the earth’s surface to increase very slightly but with disastrous environmental consequences. The theory is that the CO2 emitted by burning fossil fuel is the ‘greenhouse gas’ causes ‘global warming’ — in fact, water is a much more powerful greenhouse gas and there is 20 time more of it in our atmosphere (around one per cent of the atmosphere) whereas CO2 is only 0.04 per cent. There is no reproducible scientific evidence CO2 has significantly increased in the last 100 years.”

Green guru Dr. James Lovelock has described the environmental movement as becoming “a religion, and religions don’t worry too much about facts.” He added that “It’s just as silly to be a denier as it is to be a believer. You can’t be certain.”

In March, Greenpeace co-founder Patrick Moore told Congress that “There is no scientific proof that human emissions of carbon dioxide are the dominant cause of the minor warming of the Earth’s atmosphere over the past 100 years… no actual proof, as it is understood in science, actually exists.”

In an interview, Dr. Moore claimed that the climate-change agenda is driven by special interest groups seeking money or political influence or both.

Whether you are a climate change believer or skeptic, or undecided, most would probably agree that politicizing the debate has not been helpful to anyone.

Do you think the science behind climate change is settled?

Right wing radio (who tend also to be science deniers, in general) and Fox News have politicized the debate.  There is a worldwide consensus that only some in the US are in denial about.  My break with the orthodoxy is in what kinds of things need to be ameliorated to prevent some rather overstated (IMO) impacts of CC.  It's clear it's happening, what's not ENTIRELY clear is the impact that it will truly have.  There is a lot of good science backing up the claims, so we'll see.  But Murica is the only place where the debate is so polarized and political.

Anyway, worldwide temperatures have risen by 1C since the Industrial Revolution.

The consensus is that if that increases to 2C then major unpredictable shit starts to happen.  Ocean currents changing course; scores of hurricanes instead of a few; deserts expanding; southern UK turning into malarial swampland, or Newfoundland depending on what happens to the Gulf Stream.

Glad I won't be around to see it, or hear our descendants cursing us.

Oh, and what's that warming doing? Killing our megafauna (well, speeding up the megafauna deaths humans have been causing for millennia).

And that has dire consequences down the line.

It's all connected.

GLOBAL WARMING? NASA says Antarctic has been COOLING for past SIX years

An intensive scientific study of both Earth's poles has found that from 2009 to 2016 overall temperature has dropped in the southern polar region.

NASA’s Operation IceBridge is an airborne survey of polar ice and has finalised two overlapping research campaigns at both the poles.

In the last few weeks NASA has revealed the overall amount of ice has increased at the Antarctic and the amount of sea ice has also extended.

Coupled with the latest announcement of slight cooling in the area, it has fuelled claims from climate change deniers that human industrialisation is not having the huge impact on global tenperature as often is claimed.

Christopher Shuman, a University of Maryland, Baltimore County glaciologist working at Goddard, said: "Field data suggests that there’s been a modest cooling in the area over the 2009–2015 time period, and images collected during that time by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer on the Terra and Aqua satellites show more persistent fast ice (sea ice that is attached to the shore) in the Larsen A and Larsen B embayments”

However, Mr Shuman warned that in some areas of the Antarctic, glaciers continued to melt at significant levels, despite  the slight temperature drop.

At the south polio, the mission observed a big drop in the height of two glaciers situated in the Antarctic Peninsula.

Mr Shuman added: "These IceBridge measurements show that once the ice shelves collapse, even some cooling and a good deal of persistent sea ice is not able to hold back these larger glaciers and they continue to lose mass overall.”

During one flight in the Peninsula that mapped the drainage area of several glaciers, a drop of more than 490 feet (150 meters) in the height of two glaciers since IceBridge last plotted them, in 2009, was measured.

Both glaciers, called Green and Hektoria, were tributaries to the Larsen B ice shelf, which disintegrated in 2002.

After the ice shelf collapsed, it stopped buttressing the glaciers that fed it, and glacier elevations have fallen dramatically since then.

A study published in 2012 showed average elevation losses of up to 82 feet (25 meters) per year for the lower Green and Hektoria glaciers from 2006 to 2011.

A NASA spokesman said:"So IceBridge’s discovery that both are still losing ice fast many years after the loss of the adjacent ice shelf is “not all that surprising given what we have observed with other sensors,” said Mr Shuman.

So, confusingly, the new details of further glacial melt have fuelled those who believe we are causing global warming and polar ice melt.

At the Arctic north pole, the project collected much needed measurements of the status of land and sea ice at the end of the Arctic summer melt season.

The results of these have yet to be published, but the whole issue is set to be debated in full at a clime change conference in Paris later this month.

That's an easy game to play:

World Meteorological Organisation: 2015 likely to be Warmest on Record, 2011-2015 Warmest Five Year Period

https://www.wmo.int/...ive-year-period

"The oceans have been absorbing more than 90% of the energy that has accumulated in the climate system from human emissions of greenhouse gases, resulting in higher temperatures and sea levels. In the first nine months of 2015, global ocean heat content through both the upper 700 meters and 2000 meters of the oceans reached record high levels. The latest estimates of global sea level indicate that the global average sea level in the first half of 2015 was the highest since satellite observations became available in 1993."

"Significant warmth was recorded across large areas of the oceans. The Tropical Pacific was much warmer than average, exceeding 1°C over much of the central and eastern equatorial Pacific, consistent with the signature of a strong El Niño. The northeast Pacific, much of the Indian Ocean and areas in the north and south Atlantic were significantly warmer than average.  Areas to the south of Greenland and in the far southwest Atlantic were significantly colder than average."

So the Arctic is melting while Antarctica is growing.

What will this do to the ocean currents?  Billions of tons of cold fresh water are entering the Atlantic system from the North, while in the Southern Ocean the currents will be diverted by the ice cap growth.  That will in turn mess up the trade winds.  Which will in turn change the climates of a lot of nations.  Temperate areas will get colder, warm areas will get hotter, dry areas will get rain and wetlands will become arid.

Unpredictable outcomes will follow.

And that's the whole problem with Global Warming, it's thoroughly unpredictable. Which is what gives the naysayers reason to think they are right and makes it harder for those putting forward the correct case to get it over to the uneducated. *sigh*
