I'd thought about investing in a dashboard cam, but bought a relatively cheap compact camera mount for my windscreen instead. Took this footage as a test, works very well, one or two limitations notwithstanding.

It's a fairly bulky thing with a large suction cup but even so I wouldn't use a heavy camera with it. I'm not the sort of person to record all my car trips, if I was I'd buy a GoPro or something more discreet. The only way I could get this to work satisfactorily was by hanging the camera from it upside down (so I had to rotate the video 180 degrees in the edit). But I already had a suitable camera and this mount cost less than £4, so happy days.

You can tell that James is posher than me because he says Tesco while I still say Tesco's ;)

I'd have to drive for five miles before hitting countryside like that.

What video editing package do you use James?

:)

This route isn't really what I think of as one of the countryside routes, I'd go the other way along Heather Lane for that or turn off the big road you see from 3:10 or so onward.

I use Avidemux - simple but effective, has filters for rotating, fading in, other effects and it's nice and easy to crop and edit bits out if nec.

Easy to drop in a new soundtrack too, as I did here.

That just looks horrifyingly wrong!

I've driven on the left side, while in the Caribbean.  I've never driven in London, always taking the tube or taxi.  Damn that really looks scary from that POV.

Wrong side of the road? Try a road with only one side. Here's a video of me driving up the switchback section of the single track Bealach-Na-Ba mountain pass into Applecross in Scotland. Not a dash cam, just my wife filming from her phone (hand-held) as we drove up the road.

Shocking to see such dreary rainy weather....

I watched the first minute and was sure you were going to crash into that car that was turning right.

nice neighborhood!

I don't know, but it's been said: You do or don't and then you're dead
So climb away, get higher, son- never straight, just move ahead
Know, my child, that there is no devil seekin' to cause guilt in the hearts to men.
No evil, save blind faith, ignorance, and the desire for the unprepared to blame others for the devastation left in the wake of change.
Fear not the movement of the heavens above or the earth below for change is what we are, my child.
And if we are reflections of the divine we must roll with these changes, for we are these changes.

Link us up, I'm sure they have a couple million more units to sell.

Holy crap, shipped really quick and it's a really decent unit.  The mount is much beefier than I expected, considering the camera weighs almost nothing.  I'll post a video when I get a chance, the video I took coming home today was meh.  Had to adjust the angle of the camera and knock the exposure down 1/3.

And here I thought this thread was going to be about the popularity of Russian dashcam video compilations on YouTube.  If you ever have some time to kill, check some out for a good laugh.  Much better than cyst-popping videos.  :)  Insurance fraud is so rampant is Russia that many drivers now have dashcams to prevent lawsuits and claims against their insurance.
