I'm no computer ace, but I said I'd look at my daughters laptop. I'll have to get back to you on details like OS, but here's what it's doin', hoping someone might have seen this. When I turn it on and log in, it loads the desktop, then goes back to loading the icons at the lower right, then reloads the desktop every few seconds...do the 3 finger and nothin', but sometimes makes the desktop stay for a short time(10-30 sec, tho this might be coincidental)...it's stuck in this loop. When I turn it on, I don't see any bootup msgs or anything to do a restore, it quickly goes to the welcome screen, I click and get to login screen. I'm used to PCs where you get a bootup sequence and can do some stuff...she took it back to the dealer(BestBuy, it's <1yr old) and they said it needs format and reload for 150 bucks. I asked her where the software disk was, and she had no idea what I was talkin' aboot. Do they not always give you an OS disk when you buy a computer? Hey, I'm ignorant on these contraptions, having never bought one, tho I deal with them at work...

These days you don't get an install disk, usually - instead there's a restore partition on the hard drive.

Yes, what Slim said.  It's re-installable typically from its own reinstall partition.  You can check with Toshiba online for some support regarding this.  I think you'd be best calling them as this is a fairly new computer and might have a simple solution.  Best Buy won't do a thing for you unless you purchased the extended warranty through them and even then they are pretty bad.

First off, don't give Best Buy that money. Stay away.

Second, in the same vein as Slim and FJ... see if she still has the setup and support sheet for the laptop. If so it will have some details on hoe to contct support in the worst case, best case - will say how to get into recovery mode.

Try the internet too. Google the model number (Tohsiba A-300, or whatever it is). You may well find the support info you need.

The other thing to consider before doing a full recover... does she have anything on the machine that she needs? Photos, files, etc .Not to make your situation mroe complex, but if you do a restore, it's like hitting the reset button... all that gets deleted.

Good luck - let us know how you progress. Will try to help if possible.

I got into the system restore and tried that, but it didn't complete cuz it said there was program running possible anti-virus that was unaccessable. Is there a way of turning off anti-virus from the boot menu or whatever you call it that comes on when you tap f-12 right upon startup???

Sounds like a false error, there wouldn't be any antivirus running at that phase of bootup.

So...when the restore didn't complete I went online and found that some folks were having this same issue as result of a conflict with Norton Aniti-Virus which was on this laptop. So I started the PC in safe mode and was able to uninstall the Norton AV, and viola, it worked!!! Not sure what to reinstall in way of AV, prolly Avast...

There are plenty of free anti-virii that work just fine. Not sure why anyone would pay for anti-virus these days.

They said I could be anything, so I became a disappointment.
