But in all seriousness - New Horizons is great. I love this stuff.

Is it me or does that look like a sideways cross in the lower hemisphere of the new photo?

Nice video on this page describing some new findings... including a nice estimate on Pluto's true diameter.

News flash, Pluto was downgraded to a backwater, dwarf-something-or-other.  Point taken though, we should rebel and move to Denmark.

A lot of people didn't see it as a true planet for a while.

Here in the US we were just obsessive about calling it a "planet" because it was the only "planet" discovered by an American.

I think the proper classification now is "trans-Neptunian dwarf-planet" and some are calling it and other trans-Neptunian objects like it "plutoids,"

labente deinde paulatim disciplina velut desidentes primo mores sequatur animo, deinde ut magis magisque lapsi sint, tum ire coeperint praecipites, donec ad haec tempora quibus nec vitia nostra nec remedia pati possumus perventum est.

First our declining morals slid, bit by bit, and then our very national spirit.  Then the collapse became greater and greater, and our principles began to go, until at last, it has come to this age, in which we can bear neither our crimes nor the cure for them.

Good morning Pluto!! New Horizons passed it about an hour and half ago.

Here she is as seen yesterday from about 500,000 miles out. Remarkable!

Doesn't seem as if they've found anything yet...they do have a couple of crews on the ground though...

I've been following this mission on and off since launch. I'll feel a bit empty now you could say that it's over.

Pluto looks very much like Neptune's moon Triton in the latest image. Triton of course is likely a captured KBO.

Chin up! Apparently, they can keep you busy until at least 2019...

http://news.discover...s-go-150320.htm

From another article....

Speeding past Pluto, New Horizons will then travel on to its next destination, with a 2019 due date: another Kuiper Belt object, a neighbor of Pluto, also icy and deeply mysterious.

Until it runs out of power in 2030 in a deep space death — 7.36 trillion miles from home — “it will continue to do great science,”
