So, 9 1/2 years ago, NASA launched the New Horizons spacecraft. It reached Jupiter in about a year and used its gravity to slingshot out to deep space.

This thing is the size of a piano and has travelled more than 3 billion miles. Pluto’s diameter is 1,471 miles. If you held it up against the Earth, it would fit nicely in between the Mississippi River and the Grand Canyon. Its largest companion moon, Charon, would round out the rest of the east coast, from the Mississippi to the Carolinas.

In one week it will pass within 7,500 miles of Pluto. That’s pretty fucking cool.

Good post.  We needed a thread about this.  Been fascinated wondering what Pluto was like since I was 7 and started reading astronomy books for kids.  It was always the one whose diameter was *estimated* along with all sorts of other stats no one had any idea about.

This mission cannot succeed without Steve Buscemi on the team.

Wow, this thread lasted 5 posts before it went off the rails...is that a CP record?   :D

Seriously, I love space stuff too and (like you SJS) have let the imagination fly about Pluto since as far back as I can remember. In addition to liking Snakes and Arrows, should I also be ashamed to admit that I was disappointed when Pluto was downgraded to a dwarf planet? Maybe I'll just keep that to myself..

This is what Pluto looked like before

Wow, good stuff

http://www.bbc.com/n...onment-33440926

Snippets:

It is due to pass over the surface of the dwarf planet at a distance of less than 13,000km, grabbing a mass of images and other kinds of scientific data.

The pictures at that point will be pin sharp, showing targets on the surface of the 2,300km-wide body at a resolution of better than 100m per pixel.

It is moving at nearly 14km/s - far too fast to go into orbit on 14 July. Instead, it must gather as much information as it can while it sweeps past not just Pluto, but its five moons as well: Charon, Styx, Nix, Kerberos, and Hydra.

The flyby occurs on the 50th anniversary of the first successful American pass of Mars by the Mariner 4 spacecraft.

By way of comparison, New Horizons will gather 5,000 times as much data at Pluto than Mariner did at the Red Planet.

News flash, Pluto was downgraded to a backwater, dwarf-something-or-other.  Point taken though, we should rebel and move to Denmark.
