I can hear a difference in FLAC and MP3 320 and it isn't even close. But my hearing extends up to 26Khz in pure tones and I know a shitload about the science of harmonic overtones, psychoacoutics, etc. and don't particularly care to open that can of worms.
All I have to say is even if you are one that can't pick out the difference, your brain sure as hell notices, and that is a perceptual difference.
I once used MP3's but as a few years went by I noticed an increasingly agitated experience in listening to music that vanished overnight when I switched to FLAC.
That is to say, if you've listened to the CD enough and can't ell the difference you might fool your ear for a very long time thinking it's the same thing, you might not. The reverse is true. If you've never heard the lossless version and there are not obvious artifacts and issues with the sound quality, you won't miss the difference. It's all highly dependent on that exact experience every listen how it goes.
Considering the availability of hard drive space, there is no reason to not use FLAC for me.

Yeah. Turns out my Dad is a sound engineer with 35 years of experience and has confirmed everything I know about it after he had the same difficulties in the industry with some of the more ignorant members of said community. He's worked for the government on top-secret acoustics research, that should be an indicator we know what we are talking about, I guess.

Whatever happened to that idea of choosing a bitrate anywhere from 24Kbps to full bitrate with MP3 anyway? Or was that some sort of waveform scheme that had to due with samplerate?

You were about an hour ahead of me...... LOL.
The first sentence of that post made me wonder. The second removed all doubt.

18.5K was unbearably loud and I hear it immediately.
I can hear 18K with the headphones sitting on the table two feet away.
The voice calling the action was at about 75db.
I'd like a truly lossless version of that though, I don't think YouTube can do anything but lossy with a lowpass.

Just in case your knowledge of female anatomy is lacking, there's no way fun happens at 18 inches. Ow.
