I do feel for people who don't have a complete penis I must say, especially when they had no choice in the matter. Millions of people.

More information is helpful as I don't think people truly make an informed decision when they do decide to put their child through this.  I think the tide is turning in the US or was until that HIV study came out a few years ago.  The main problem now is that American women likely have a preference based on their own experiences with the majority being cut.  That may be as big of a role in the decision making process, ie, this may hurt him now, but he'll be thankful later on because girls won't like it uncut.

I think you're right, Joe.  I was circumcised as a baby and it's all I've ever known.  When I happen to see an uncut pink thing, it's a bit horrifying, though I don't make a habit of it.   I don't like the reasons why it is/was done, but for me personally, I am completely fine with it.  I mean, what could I do if I didn't like it...have it reattached?  I think i can be reversed, really, that's a bit crazy...

But women, I think are used to what most men have.  And that will be the biggest reason why it's going to continue, more or less, for the foreseeable future...IMO

I had a couple of American girlfriends.  Neither seemed to mind.  In fact one was fascinated! :D

A very bizarre Bible story involving mass-circumcision.

"TL;DR Dinah gets raped. Dicks are trimmed, men murdered, and families are enslaved."

From hns.uk:

"circumcision is usually regarded as a 'treatment of last resort'"

By happy you aren't Hasidic or other ultra-orthodox Jew. The Mohels are pedophiles acting as cock cutters. Sick fucks.

Suggesting it's anything remotely like the female version is absurd...it's more done for cosmetic reasons anymore, I think...leaving it for later is a tough call, but prolly the right way to go...but mutilation? Naah...

it is not nearly so severe as female genital mutilation, true. But it is the act of irreparably removing a part of the body that serves a definite purpose, and that is quite properly described as mutilation - strictly speaking. It's probably not helpful to describe it in those terms because it's a bit emotive.

Here is another advantage of socialised medicine over capitalist medicine - the reduction in the level of surgery which has no clinical value.

Just a quick straw poll for our Left-Pond friends - none of you have intact willies but how many of you have tonsils?

I doubt it's a socialised vs profit-motive thing really, maybe there's a small influence there but it's mostly cultural I'm sure. That said the power of capitalism to influence culture is quite strong; I'm sure I read that Mother's Day or one of those other annual celebrations was invented to sell greetings cards.

But surely the medical professional has a strong enough sense of ethics not to do that.

I've no doubt that the profit motive has an effect on the incidence of elective surgery with no good medical reason.  Look at the explosion in cosmetic surgery.  Bum enhancement?  I ask you.  What happens when Kim Kardashian stops being cool and the waif look comes back?  Will all those women want their bum implants removed in order to have their "self-esteem" back?

How about let's start with a healthy discussion and increased awareness?

Second for what?

Having a healthy discussion to increase awareness.  I think you were the first to try this route, but so far no one has seemed to follow through with your suggestion.  ;)

Oh, I appreciate what they are saying, and yes, the thread appears to now be turning towards the healthy and illuminating discussion you requested.  But you must admit the first page lacked that substance.

When I was growing up (49 now), it was common practice to have the tonsils taken out just as a matter of course.  I don't think that's the case now...but back then, everyone had it done.
