The last two shows in NJ and at MSG have rendered this thread obsolete.  Ged's voice was amazing, and everyones playing was maybe the best I've ever seen.  And the real star of the show...  PROPER FUCKING SONG TEMPOS!  Tight, fast, and furious...  The way Rush was always meant to be.

Different world, compared to last tour.

Don't get me wrong, I was very happy with the Clockwork Angels Tour, I thought they did a fine job of it, although Geddy did sound more strained on the older tracks than currently.  The one that sticks out as a sore thumb for me was the Time Machine Tour...  Slow song tempos and Geddy's voice was probably the worst I've ever heard it on that tour, it wasn't a good run for him.

I think it's probable Geddy has been experimenting over the years with different ways of compensating for his change in vocal range.  For most of the 80's and 90's he honestly didn't even try the challenging older stuff.  In the 2000's he at least put 100% effort into becoming a better "singer", trying falsetto, trying the deep end of his natural register, trying whatever you'd call the "yodeling effect"...  even if the new stylings didn't satisfy the original the way the fans wanted, he was trying to become a more powerful singer.  I think on this tour he's realized clear and natural really is the best way to go, and he sounds awesome for it.  He's back to his comfortable midrange, but with years of constant "training" behind it now.  Whatever we may think of the results over the past decade, it's not for lack of him working really hard at it, and we now know in fact the his voice is not shot, and that his hard work and experimenting are paying off.  Finally.  On the last tour.   :P

Not anymore. I started collecting as a hobby when I was 8 ('77). I still remember getting Ed Figueroa of the Yankees and Johnny Bench in my very first pack. Around '83 I started to really get into it, till the end of '86. By '87 all I cared about was Rush, Iron Maiden and bass guitars and never bought another pack. Years later I picked up the remaining sets from a friend.

Hey...where's Perry?

My dad and I were big into collecting cards up until '91 when all the BS offshoot companies starting having sets.  1987 Topps was the best looking card of all time.

If by "just fine" you mean "a little slow", then yeah

They said I could be anything, so I became a disappointment.

No, duffel-bag-for-brains.  You're wrong as usual when it comes to Rush.  Snakes Tour was the slow one.

TSOR - pretty much always the same tempo.

Time Stand Still - same tempo as on album.

Presto - pretty much same as on album.

Stick It Out - about the same as on album.

Working Them Angels - very similar to Snakes Tour

LTTA (that stands for Leave That Thing Alone, because you probably have no clue) - same as on album.

Faithless - doesn't matter unless it's played at 700 bpm to get it over with faster, but very similar to on album.

BU2B - very similar to album version.

Freewill - faster than Snakes Tour

Marathon - way faster than ASOH version, maybe a hair faster than on album.

Subdivisions - way faster than Snakes Tour

Tom Sawyer - practically the same tempo as all the 2000s versions.

Red Barchetta - very fast

YYZ - faster than Snakes Tour

Limelight - much faster than Snakes Tour

The Camera Eye - very similar to album version

Witch Hunt - very similar to Snakes tour, it's supposed to be slow anyway

Vital Signs - very similar to album version

Caravan - very similar to album version

Drum Solo - 2.84763% faster than Snakes Solo

O'Malley's Break - do the algebra, and you find in relation to Hope, it comes out 1.194% faster than Hope.
Closer to the Heart - tempo was fine as the song doesn't require a set tempo to be good or not

2112 - same as ti ever was

Far Cry - sounds just a smidge faster than Snakes

La Villa Strangiato - tempo great

Working Man - tempo great

You just got owned by me, as usual, Skepazoid.

Since it was a one-off decision to slow certain songs down, I have no clue.  The obvious answer is because their chops had diminished.  Judging by the tours that followed, that's obviously not the case.  Slowinig them down could help Geddy deliver better vocals.  On Bangkok, it made sense, but not on the other songs.

My only guess is they weren't feeling it in tour rehearsals, then once they got into touring shape, they were already comfortable with the dialed-bck tempos.  Or it's just something they wanted to do with an unknown reason.
