Good look Neil. Good look

I think that was the time he auditioned for The Pirates of Penzance.

Hey there goes Alex. He's loaded with money. Wow he's really set himself up great.

^^^^

The story behind that second photo can be found in this Classic Rock interview.

https://www.cygnus-x...ock-08-2008.php

Backstage it's apparent that Rush's 'crazy' period is long gone. In fact it's doubtful that there ever was one. I certainly never witnessed any tantrums, tiaras or deviant peccadilloes on my last encounter with the band in 1982. Apart from a mildly debauched midnight rendezvous with Lifeson, the only other memorable moments of that assignment was an hour long interview with the then incredibly erudite and intense Peart, that left me with a lingering, painful migraine (fortunately the great man has mellowed out since then) and the fact that Geddy Lee won a bet against Geoff Barton (then Sounds Editor, now CR's Editor At Large) who was convinced that the normally reticent and camera shy bassist wouldn't allow photographer Ross Halfin to take his picture for the cover of Sounds. (He did and can be seen beaming on the cover, right, holding up a plate with the words 'Barton You Lose', scrawled in felt tip by yours truly.) But there were no demolished hotel rooms, tramlines of cocaine or mud sharks.

Geoff Barton was the British journalist who championed Rush in this country from about the time of CoS and who wrote an article in the 2112 and Hemispheres tour books.

I seem to remember there was a twist to that, in that Halfin never actually had that bet with Barton; it was just a ruse to get Geddy's photo.

I remember buying both those editions of Sounds at the local newsagents in Hartlepool. In fact I almost certainly still have them.

Doesn't that special offer from the 1982 magazine tell a story about how different things were, back then? A heavy metal tape for £1.25. Nowadays kids can gorge themselves on heavy metal for hours for free on YouTube or Spotify.

Halfin is of course the photographer who was hired, then fired by Rush (or their management) for insulting their audience about ten years ago.

Just found the story of the supposed bet with Geoff Barton:

POSTSCRIPT: AND finally, at last, the story of Ross Halfin, the plate and the message 'Barton You Lose'. Remember the October 16 Sounds front cover? Well, the outrageously belated story behind it it as follows...

As you may know, Rush have a total phobia of cameras and do not allow pictures of themselves to be taken anywhere but onstage. Ross Halfin, however, was determined to hustle an offstage session, and this is how he did it...

Halfin being the persistent (and highly ingenious) bastard that he is, decided to accomplish this feat by telling Geddy the following pack of lies:

Halfin claimed that Sounds Editor Geoff Barton had bet him the princely sum of 50 pounds that he would be unable to snap any offstage pictures of Rush. Consequently Geddy, anxious to see Barton out of pocket, relaxed the 'no pix' rule for a moment and posed for around half a dozen photos, holding a plate emblazoned with the words 'Barton You Lose' (the bet, geddit?).

All this for a wager that never really existed. Halfin got his way, and no money ever exchanged hands. Didn't I say he was an ingenious bastard?

.. from http://www.2112.net/...21218sounds.htm which is a transcript of an interview in Sounds from a few months later.

Just noticed that both those pieces - the one that Pete linked from 2008 and the one in the last post, from 1982 - are written by Pete Makowski. So in 1982 Makowski asserts that the supposed wager between Halfin and Barton was a fabrication, and in 2008 he claims that it was real. Aging memory, I suppose

Not a lot of offstage pics of Rush minus the requisite “album sessions” now that you mention it. The guitar and drum rags notwithstanding

I feel with a lot of these "kid protege" videos you get someone with the technical ability to play the song...but it's always kinda clear that they're not really making music.  This is not that!  Her feel is really great.

I think that one's in Newcastle - February 1978. Morning after one of the AFTK tour gigs at the City Hall, I suppose.
