Spend some time pondering what might be unusual about that pic. The answer is in the spoiler.

Good job on hiding your supposition in a spoiler tag post-edit, James.

is it really any worse than putting someone in an open casket and letting everyone parade past so they can comment on how good they look?

at my Mom's funeral last year when people said that I wanted to say 'no, she doesn't look good--she's dead' but I held my tongue and was cordial and polite.

I have demanded that my wife close my casket for the funeral and viewing-I find it creepy.

Yes, this was a common practice...ordinary by the standards then, creepy as fuck now.

Yeah, the Irish side of my family do that.  I find it creepy too.  Just box me up and stick me in a hole.

Sorry about the loss of your mother.

alzheimer's, she was definitely ready to go. If it's ever a blessing for someone to die this was the case with my Mom.

still miss her--but not the way she was the last couple of years.

Sorry Stone. My good friend's father is going through that. He's still somewhat in the early stages but it's progressing.

yeah, by our standards I'd say it is worse. You have an open casket funeral so that the bereaved can have one last look if they so choose. Then that's it, committed to our memories.

A photo is somewhat permanent.   I've seen people taking casket photos at funerals and it always creeps me out.

I'm sorry about your Mom.

The creepy factor comes in the way they tried to depict the dead person as being still alive.

The movie The Others used these types of photos to very spooky effect. It was the first I'd heard of the practice and had to go online to find out if it was a real thing.

The mostly unfunny (imo) movie A Million Ways to Die in the West had at least one funny recurring gag about how people in the 1800s never smiled in photos. Well it's a blessing none of the kids in the OP are smiling. lol.
