A few years ago we were having the LDS missionaries over for dinner, and mentioned that our computer was acting up. One of them said he'd fix it. We let him take it, and he brought it back with a Linux op system in it! All I ever used that particular computer for was ITunes. Apparently iTunes doesn't work with Linux. I had to re-download everything onto another computer.

He thought he was doing us a favor.....

That's quite a blunt instrument as problem solutions go, an entire change of operating system. That said, there are ways to get the Windows version of iTunes working under Linux. The very best approach to that problem would be to use something else to manage your music, though.

You can, but the sound tends to be murkier and depending on if it's white or red, it can give you a headache.  ;)

Brainiacs and nerdlingers use Linux or one of it's many iterations.

Normal, average people who want a decent computer at a reasonable price use Windows.

Hipsters, people automatically thinking more expensive = better, and/or those people who are proud to tell you they have a Mac, use Apple products.

Simple and to the point. Fuckin' eh.

What you say is more or less true.

I like both Linux and Windows. Each has its advantages.

I taught myself how to program on a 486 in 94 and 95 id installed what I think was Red hat 1...just straight c and c++..no complicated gui tools. So that I could get a leg in on the snooty Solaris guys at work.

My wife had a problem today with her windows 8 laptop.... It took me forever to figure out because I Dont know where anything is in that piece of shit.

I've seen a lot of os's.. But 8 is so counter intuitive. So anyway, she has no confidence in future windows
..I think because of my frustration. So now she wants a Mac.

We can do that.

My next machine may well be a Linux box, and I'll run win 7 and xp in virtual machine... Until microsoft gets its shit together.. If ever.

Supposedly when WIndows 10 comes out, it will be a free download for owners of 7 and 8. Doesn't mean it will be any better but at least you could maybe put it on a flash drive and check it out from there.

There's some truth in this, especially in your third assertion. But normal, average people can install Linux as well these days; it doesn't require geek points like it used to in the early '00s when it started to take hold. It's free, it offers a lot more choice about the way you do things, it's quicker and more responsive and you won't have to mess about with anti-virus products.

Some more exotic graphics cards and other hardware might require you to do some command line tinkering, but that's rare these days.

Of course if you mainly use your computer for iTunes, then it's probably not a good idea.

back in late 2009 i had this fuckin vista machine that i had purchased that may.  good specs, dual core processor, 6gb RAM 500gb HD, all good, even a dedicated 512mb graphics card.

every time I would try and listen to music while doing more than two tasks vista would stutter.

tried to upgrade to 7, vista fucked up so I went and downloaded something I had heard of called "ubuntu."

there was no turning back, i backed up all of my shit, installed it over windows and spent 2 days figuring it all out. its been nearly 6 years now.

i moved on to debian about 3 years ago and i've been sing fedora since last year.

grep, gotta agree with you that fedora is king of the fuckin mountain. not to speak badly of other distros,

linux the fuck on!

Ubuntu and Mint are the best desktop distros in my opinion. Most of our customers run RedHat on their servers so that's what I work with most often.

RedHat hasn't been free for a long time. Of the RedHat derivatives I strongly recommend Oracle Linux - they basically just recompile RedHat's stuff and give you it for free with a different label on; no subscription required. I've patched RedHat servers using Oracle Linux updates to get round the subscription and registration nonsense. It just works.
