I was on Youtube and entered her name and chose one of the first videos that came up, something like 'This is how we do it'

I tried. Really.

I made it through 44 sec. Had to turn it off then. I think after even about 10 sec it was apparent just what the extent of the musical ideas would be.

To me it sounds no different from that "Friday" song. Auto-tuned voice, monotonous jungle beats, insipid, utterly depressing synthetic-y sounding keyboards. Tries to have lots of style, no substance. There really is neither of either.

At least you gave it the old college try (whatever the hell that means).

They said I could be anything, so I became a disappointment.

I'm with you on that.  I don't even think she's hot. Her whole deal just seems overly manufactured.  I'll pass...

Did anyone here say she was good?
I see her as symbolic of everything wrong with the music industry (notice I didn't say modern).

I think more of the hate for Perry deserves to be aimed at Dr. Luke and Max Martin, though.

labente deinde paulatim disciplina velut desidentes primo mores sequatur animo, deinde ut magis magisque lapsi sint, tum ire coeperint praecipites, donec ad haec tempora quibus nec vitia nostra nec remedia pati possumus perventum est.

First our declining morals slid, bit by bit, and then our very national spirit.  Then the collapse became greater and greater, and our principles began to go, until at last, it has come to this age, in which we can bear neither our crimes nor the cure for them.

They are pop songs with catchy hooks. That's about it. Not a fan.

She's cute-n-perky, and has some decent pop songs, and she writes her own stuff, I think. I rather like her, but a lot of her songs are pretty forgettable...actually, she's borderline gorgeous and sexy along with the cute-n-perky...

I find a couple of her songs uplifting.  Belting voice, has good visual sense, and a line in self-deprecation which endears me to her.  I think she could do better given stronger material.

Much preferable to these ears to those depressing Tools and Radioheads, at least.

She is your slightly better than average pop star. I'm pretty sure she writes songs about as much as Elvis wrote songs. Someone writes a song and the star throws in a lyric or idea and gets co-writing credit. Her videos crack me up. She always sings with such earnest; belting out so many cheesy lyrics as if she is really making a difference. Meanwhile fireworks are exploding from her breasts. Her spectacular, wonderful, jiggly breasts. Er, um... so in conclusion, I can't say I would seek out her music, but I don't hate it either. Unlike most current country and rap.

I'm so glad that I'm finally old enough to say "I'm old, I don't need to listen to this shit".

You've got to get to about two minutes or so. That's when the producers realize they'd better start showing her tits to make people forget she's got no talent.

Hey...where's Perry?

For no reason, here's some Iron Maiden.

I listened to Katy Perry, and I liked it

Hope my Rush friends don't mind it*

She can hold a tune, she's a charismatic performer with bundles of personality, her songs have energy and are catchy. I don't buy her records but I do enjoy the best of them when I hear them.

Here's something that's fun. Go to 4:00 and keep watching:

Excellent.  :D

I went to see Robert Glasper and his band broke into a jazz improv based on the Tom Sawyer riff.

Me thinks you either

or

2) Have lost your ability to hear

I wonder if she even knew what they were playing.  I know zero of the fans did, otherwise they would have all been covering their ears.  :P
