Sitting here in the Houston airport. Just getting back from 2 days in Puebla, 3 days in Mexico City, and 4 days in Oaxaca. Oaxaca and Puebla are perhaps the two greatest food cities in the country, which is saying a lot.

I must have gained many pounds.

This is a Puebla specialty, Chiles en Nogada, which is a large poblano pepper stuffed with chicken and fruit (!) and is crazy fucking good.

The mighty volcano Popocatepetl, seen from a park in the south of Mexico City:

The Revolutionary War of 1910 started in Puebla when the Feds attacked this building (where revolutionaries were gathering up weapons). The bullet holes in the facade have been left intact:

This is a Boucard's wren, endemic to Mexico. Picked up 26 life birds this trip, focusing on some endemics specific to Oaxaca:

The most insanely ornate cathedral I have ever seen. Santo Domingo in Puebla. Everything in this picture that is not white in color is gold. I have never seen so much gold in one place. The walls, the ceilings, the altars, everything.

This bird, unfortunately, cannot be included in my life list based on this sighting. Why? It is almost certainly an escaped pet bird. It is a White-throated magpie-jay that we found in the south of Mexico City. They simply do not live here; the habitat is all wrong.

Gorgeous bird, though. Just need to head west to get a wild one.

I'm surprised some Mexican hasn't stolen it. That's a lot of Tijuana bridgework!
Or at least tagged it...

Announced over the PA here in IAH airport constantly:

"The interfaith chapel, located in concourse C, is open to all, 24 hours a day."

My wife said: "Well. That could be awkward."

My wife forgot to take out the ziploc bag with our liquids prior to going through TSA...

Guess what happened?

Nothing.

She realized after we made it "across the border" what she had done.

I told her maybe we should tell them, and have them have us go through again.

We decided not to.

Just FYI.

Maybe they don't see it / don't care?

Or are they inept?

On the PA here they keeping reminding us to never accept items that a stranger has aksed you to take on board.

Has ANYONE ever had this happen to them?

Do people approach you outside the airport with packages asking you to take them? Does this happen to you? And do you typically say "Why, SURE!!"

Well then YOU need to pay more attention to airport PA announcements.

A wandering Hermit then :)

This has all reminded me that a visit to Popacatepetl is on my Bucket List.
