my son kept hitting no to all the prompts to update, for many months. Today it was shoving it down his throat and we have been all over the internet trying to find a way to halt it. It put a timer on it (you have 3 hours...you have 2 hours...you have 15 minutes...till automatic upgrade). All we could find was stops to automatic driver updates. We tried something but obviously it was the wrong thing because it went and shut off. Now it's updating. he has a a lenovo ideapad z580. Any ideas? we've looked on cnet too, but any queries online that ask for downgrading (or stopping the timeclock) led to the stopping driver updates.

Fear not the movement of the heavens above or the earth below for change is what we are, my child.
And if we are reflections of the divine we must roll with these changes, for we are these changes.

Why would you do such a thing??!?!

That's suicide.  You take the updates because they protect you.  Mostly security updates and updates to flawed code.

Moving from 8.0 to 8.1 will require some programs to have to be reinstalled.  A little bit of a pain in the ass but settings and personal files are kept.  Of course I would have a backup just in case.

There is a large amount of code changes from 8.0 to 8.1 so I am not sure of a "go back" solution without using Dr. Google...

the reason he wants to is because so many gamers complain of serious lag and some other things i myself know nothing about. i'll ask him specifically when he gets up.

To prevent this from happening in the future you can turn off automatic updates. By default they are on because most people can't remembrt or can't handle on their own.

Generally speaking in the windows environment you need these updates because they address key vulnerabilities.

In your control panel, turn off auto update if you don't want to be forced.  I have my 'update' set to "Ask me before update is installed" and that is probably why I'm still on Windows 7 Premium instead of 8.  With 8, they MADE you use BING, and I can't stand that program/search engine.  I use Google, and I don't like Wimpdows stuff in general, but I'm also not a fucking programmer, and can't do the optional stuff like Linus or whatever it's called and shit....

I did that for a different reason, but yes, if you still have the original install disc, re-install if it allows you to.

well, he doesn't mind most updates, it was just this one he didn't want because everywhere gamers are saying it causes problems. well, when the computer finally came back up, it listed a ton of things he would have to reinstall.. he doesn't have discs for all those things- some came with the laptop, so i told him he would probably get screen prompts to click yes to, as they came back on. we did click off the automatic updates off but we didn't see to do that till during the actual countdown, and literally with only a couple of minutes left. he has only tried one game (runescape) and that seems ok, but that's not the games that he was told by many that there would be an issue with (skyrim, fallout 3, for example).

Did the laptop not come with install discs for its installed apps? Otherwise, maybe the manufacturer assumes one will just go download what is needed from appropriate websites.

It`s a desktop actually, Dell doesn`t include OS install discs anymore, just drivers. (at least not for the mid-range computers I was looking at).   Without the Admin Account, you can`t make any changes, and the solutions posted at Microsoft require entering the "Admin Password", which is disabled (grayed out).

It`s like once endless circle.....of pain....

Perhaps you and Dusty should consider a roll-back to Win 7!!!

Hell - I`ll take Win XP, or even 95 over Win 8.

Luckily I have Win 7 on the main computer in the house (no OS disc either).  Win 8 is on my son`s computer, which he uses for homework and games - ok mostly games :D

Windows 7 > Windows XP > Windows 98 > Windows ME > Windows 95 > Windows Vista > Windows 8 > Windows 3.1.
