If i'm trying to block a few peoples' access/raiding my internet upstairs, i can block their MAC addies for their devices, but how easy is it for them to change those? i see they can be cloned/spoofed, but is this easy to do? I keep having to boot them off via their IP, but those change every time they get on. Bullshit theft, no asking permission to mooch, no assistance with the bill, screw them. i have no patience for this crap. they recently moved back in for the second time and the front of the house looks like redneck spit town, and are as sneaky as they get.

No evil, save blind faith, ignorance, and the desire for the unprepared to blame others for the devastation left in the wake of change.
Fear not the movement of the heavens above or the earth below for change is what we are, my child.

Have u hidden ur ssid? It is not super-easy to spoof a MAC, but not too hard either. Change ur ssid and hide it. This will greatly reduce bandit joins to ur network.

I'm assuming wireless connection so as Slut Puppy said go into your router settings and change the name you gave your wireless network then hide it so you have to type it in to connect and put in your password.  I sure hope you don't leave the connection open.  I can see plenty of networks from my neighbors and some are not password protected.  Think if your neighbors are doing something illegal.  All activity would point to the service you pay for...

If someone is using a unix/linux machine, changing a MAC address is trivial

ifconfig wlan0 down

ifconfig wlan0 hw ether 00:11:22:ff:aa:b1

ifconfig wlan0 up

(This may well work on an Apple computer, because they are UNIX based)

Not sure how to do it in windows.....  but I'm sure it's not difficult.

Dots, what you need is a strong and impossible to guess password.

I use a 128 bit hex one for my wifi. Looks like.

a1d2f3b1aafc......

Impossible to remember, but no one can guess it.

If that's not for you, then make up a nonsense word with some numbers mixed in, that no one will guess.  aqw12per  or something. That'll keep em' out.

Just looked it up...  in windows there are a couple of ways to do it.   Myself, I'd go the option of editing the registry directly.

well, now the apple using unix might be an issue.

so, i will go to my network settings and see how to rename and hide the ssid.

but now will all *my own* family have to re-do their own devices?

ok, i'm not seeing where i can change and hide the ssid.......

ugh...so my niece and her wife could change their MACs on their laptops, tablets and iphones? wtf?

i don't want to have to have every time my family of 4 wants to access laptops, kindles, androids xbox, etc to have to punch in freeking codes. i don't know what else to do. they are ripping us off and have no problem doing it either.

Which is worse? Being ripped off or having to enter a password (which you should only have to do once if you set the connecting device to remember the password)?

The only problem I see with that is that hoping the people she's trying to keep out even KNOW what the NSA is! LMAO!

I've got a 2 router setup and I keep the wifi disabled on the second one.  (long story about switiching to my new ISP and not wanting to mess with my home network setup, hence 2 routers)

But anyway. I've been known to taunt my neighbor with the second SSID.

LIke "MOW_YOUR_LAWN_JONNY" or "JOHN_YELLS_AT_WIFEY".

You know that when people come over his house, that SSID has to pop up on their phones.... LOL. No way to know it's me.... I keep the power on the second transmitter at 75% so it doesn't have as many bars as the one i use.
