Watched this last night.  First thoughts:

  • Capaldi is intense, dark and stranger than any other Doctor
  • He hardly even registers that Clara is a girl, and there will be none of that annoying flirting between a 20something woman and an alien fifty times her age
  • Clara got her best episode to date - there was, for once, some character development for her as she explores what she wants from her relationship with The Doctor
  • Why was the dinosaur Godzilla sized?  Why was it there at all?
  • The episode was basically a rehash of the much better The Girl in the Fireplace
  • It was too long at 114 minutes and there were long redundant sequences

If he continues to act in this fashion, my daughter is going to LOVE him....she loves it when women are treated like anyone. [non-gender] no pre-conceived stereotypes, etc.  She's not a 'feminazi', she's more a gender stereotype-nazi, Which is the way I've been practically all my life...TV/Movies, these days (don't see it ending in my lifetime) don't seem to follow this track.  They keep up the old drab stereotypes, nothing new to ponder or enjoy, pretty shabby IMO.

This show looks to be a turn in the right direction, I'll have to put it on my Netflix list again, and my X-finity record list also!  couchpotato-tv.gif

i haven't seen it yet, i'm still at mom's and she doesn't get the channel. Had the boys DVR it for me. really looking forward to it- it became an after-school ritual for the boys and myself during christopher's 11th-12th grade years, the boys and i catching up on the old series. chris isn't home "after school" any more and daniel and i wouldn't watch without him, so we will have to set this series to be watched on whatever day christopher has off school.

"stranger and darker"- good.

the past flirty stuff was meh, but i really likes the last two Drs. i still have yet to go back to the first few seasons.

I don't know, but it's been said: You do or don't and then you're dead
So climb away, get higher, son- never straight, just move ahead
Know, my child, that there is no devil seekin' to cause guilt in the hearts to men.
No evil, save blind faith, ignorance, and the desire for the unprepared to blame others for the devastation left in the wake of change.
Fear not the movement of the heavens above or the earth below for change is what we are, my child.
And if we are reflections of the divine we must roll with these changes, for we are these changes.

Krystal, my daughter, has everything that is on DVD... it's pretty interesting to watch!  If you get ahold of it, you might enjoy it!

I enjoyed it, Capaldi was playing it differently from the much younger Matt Smith, David Tennant and Christopher Eccelston. Definitely a darker edge to him.  I even liked Steven Moffat's Scottish jokes (he did the same with Karen Gillan)  which I'll allowed him to get away because he is Scottish. ;)

A Bit of ol' Monty Python in him?  Is it that Scotland is a big joke to the Englandlanders?

You'd have to ask an Englandshirelander.

Nice episode. Looks like a great story arc coming up this season.

I don't know why Clara was so confused and disappointed. She's the Impossible Girl - and had been with all the other faces except for the War Doctor. ...... Unless her reaction is part of the larger story.... Hmmm.

But does this Clara remember what will happen with her future self?
I'd love to see Coleman do a one-off cameo a season and a half from now as time-snarl Clara rather than the actual-person Clara.  That would make for an interesting bit of story.  And you know how much Moffat likes his callbacks.

Plot device - put all the ageist Capaldi-deniers in her shoes and win them over.

"I need a long scarf......... Nah, that would look stupid!"

My daughter and I totally laughed at that line.

Overall I really liked the first episode and I think I'm REALLY going to like Capaldi's Doctor, I mean, how could you not.

As for Clara, I think she was written from the POV of some of the younger fans (my daughter not included) who are probably going to have a hard time accepting an older Doctor. So in that way it was probably a good episode from that perspective.

And yes, there are 2 or 3 episodes one must re-watch after this one including The Girl In The Fireplace, The Fires of Pompeii and The Girl Who Waited (see below).

What's the joke?  The BBC has 20 actors and 5 sets across all of its programs?

Something like that.

Plot device - put all the ageist Capaldi-deniers in her shoes and win them over.

It seemed like they spent a goodly portion of the episode having Clara vicariously hurl viewers' doubts at him, didn't they? It was so obvious what they were doing with that that it was rather distracting. Not to mention the Doc's own introspection about whether he was trying to tell himself something with this regeneration (that he'd become too much of a young hipster and romantic and it was time to backpedal, seemed to be the gist of it). Mixed feelings about that, myself. I'm sure many fans of the old series think the last two Docs went a bit far in that direction. On the other hand, the traditional Doctor portrayed as an asexual eunuch who never had any romantic feelings was more than a little strange too when you think about it.

Dangerous Liaisons came on HBO while I was working a day or two ago and I had an a-ha moment...that's where I'd seen (a much younger) Capaldi before, playing John Malkovich's servant. My other half was like, "Too bad he couldn't be that age playing the Doctor." I think he's going to be one of those who is used to the younger, cuter (well, nerdy-cute) actors for whom this incarnation will take a while to warm up to.

I saw it last night at the theater despite not having seen any Clara/Eleven episodes. I liked it - didn't blow me away; will take me a few episodes to break him in.

I never could get into the Eleven era.

You should at least watch the 50th ... easily Eleven's best episode. Doesn't hurt that he's got Ten to play off.
