He was always upfront about his past drug use.  He lived heartily.

Celebrity deaths don't often bug me, but this one is a gut punch.  :(

Danny Kirwan of Fleetwood Mac (1968 to 1972) died a couple of days ago.

He was on Bare Trees, right?  I love that album.

A real shame.

labente deinde paulatim disciplina velut desidentes primo mores sequatur animo, deinde ut magis magisque lapsi sint, tum ire coeperint praecipites, donec ad haec tempora quibus nec vitia nostra nec remedia pati possumus perventum est.

First our declining morals slid, bit by bit, and then our very national spirit.  Then the collapse became greater and greater, and our principles began to go, until at last, it has come to this age, in which we can bear neither our crimes nor the cure for them.

I think that was his last album with them. I have to say my knowledge of Fleetwood Mac between Peter Green leaving and Buckingham/Nicks joining is pretty sketchy.

His guitar playing was very much a bridge between the blues and pop eras. There is good music on those in between albums. It just gets overshadowed by the Green and Buckingham/Nicks eras.

His struggles with heroin were pretty well-known right?

Yes, he was a major drug user his entire life. I'm just stating that here's yet another person (Chris Cornell, Chester, etc.) that we perceive to "have it all" (money, fame, perfect job, gorgeous partner, etc.) and one day they finally decide to end it. Just shows the power of depression.

Matt "Guitar" Murphy doesn't have to take shit from his old lady in the diner anymore.

They said I could be anything, so I became a disappointment.

This is my favourite Mac tune with Danny Kirwan; one he co-wrote with Peter Green.

^^^ Sweet. That reminds me of the kind of ephemeral stuff you jam when you're a young musician with your guitarist friends in your basement or bedroom. You know it'll never get recorded and you'll forget about it in a day or two but it's really nice while it's happening.

Hey there goes Alex. He's loaded with money. Wow he's really set himself up great.

Damning with faint praise? I love that tune, I think there's another version of it somewhere though and I prefer the other one.

It's the highest praise. I wish more bands would record stuff like this. It's sad that it gets lost or forgotten. These guys set it down. My long time ago friend Ted played this type of thing when we were young guys figuring out ourselves as musicians. I was rolling tape and the thing is just phenomenal. I can only hope I have it somewhere but it might be hard to find.

DJ Fontana is now back to drumming for Elvis.

I’ll forever remember that Matt “Guitar” Murphy as the guy who was playing on the next night after my band did at a particular club around here. That made us feel like we were becoming a pretty big band.

It's true. He apparently passed away about a week ago from a heart attack. That's all we know so far.

Wow, sad.   :(

We are all getting older and this shouldn't be so unexpected, but it is.
