August Ames sucked her last —- well you know.

23. And she was beautiful. What a shame.

Pat DiNizio is permanently behind the wall of sleep.

Shittiest news of the year.

“11” is pop rock perfection.

Saw him solo back in ‘99. He did not look well THEN. Voice was in fantastic shape though.

Scientist Heinz Wolff has died.

89 he was, and he didn't look much younger than that when he used to be on Young Scientist of the Year back in the early 70s

Curious how much extra training he needed for the Space Shuttle.  Like "alright, you already know 60% of what we're going to tell you.  Here's what's different."

First our declining morals slid, bit by bit, and then our very national spirit.  Then the collapse became greater and greater, and our principles began to go, until at last, it has come to this age, in which we can bear neither our crimes nor the cure for them.

I wonder. He was probably an easy choice for that mission. Apparently he was famous for his calm. In the article in the paper, a Gemini technician was quoted as saying Young’s heart rate was around 90 at launch, whereas his own (the ground controller) was at 150.

The space shuttle seems like such a modern vehicle compared to Gemini and Apollo, but those programs were 10-15 years apart. The run of the shuttle from 1981 to, what, 2011? was twice as long. It was such a complicated machine that I think the computer systems were kept the same. Think of that. The cell phones of the last astronauts on the shuttle had generations better power than the systems controlling their rocket.

I always heard the reasons for not updating the tech were twofold.  First, the lack of desire to revamp everything drastically, and also the principle of not upgrading for the sake of upgrading.  If they tech they had could do the job, why use something more complex, with more "moving parts" that are more likely to glitch?

On top of all his other accomplishments, John Young was the first astronaut officially reprimanded by NASA because of actions during a space flight. The reason: he smuggled a corned beef sandwich aboard Gemini 3.

IIRC someone on here a few weeks ago reckoned that Ray Thomas of the Moody Blues had pegged it. He hadn't at the time, but he has now.
