hash browns or home fries?

err....if teh Brits need a translation, "hash browns" are fried shredded potaters, and "home fries" are chunky fried pertaters, usually with peppers n onions. Love em both as part of a take-two-weeks-off-your-life-balanced breakfast.

With ketchup of course.

Hash browns but not with ketchup (yuck).  Hash browns with Tabasco™ - the ONLY way to go...

I grew up with eating hashbrowns with ketchup and 2 eggs over easy on top.  I still do that and throw in some Tabasco...well a lot of Tabasco.

They're potatoes. No matter how you cook them, they are the breakfast of champions.

We know what they are.  Sometimes young British table staff in restaurants use these Americanisms, so I correct them.  We call them 'potato cakes' and 'chunky chips' respectively.  I prefer the former.  The latter are not proper chips, and pepper on chips is just flat-out wrong.  You put salt and vinegar on them, or tomato sauce.

Awful House makes the best hash browns, especially at 3am... Smothered, diced, chunked & double-covered and it's a freakin' MEAL. The over-medium eggs that go with are great for adding just that little bit of yokey goodness... (and I wonder why I needed a stent? not.)

and for those who don't know:

smothered = onions

diced = maters

chunked = ham

covered = cheese

No other establishment (aside from the home kitchen) comes close to making hash browns so damn delicious...

Hash browns

crispy-hash-browns-1.jpg

Home Fries:

20100110-bobcatbite-homefries.jpg

The former is extremely greasy, because oil permeates the shredded potatoes and they cook more slowly absorbing lots of fat.  The latter are more like chips, but unlike this picture, come highly seasoned, with paprika, salt, pepper, I use old bay seasoning myself.
